Tip of the Month

Get rid of Zombie pages. Halloween is on its way, but those spooky monsters aren’t the zombies we’re talking about. Zombie pages are website pages that have no value and often aren’t updated. They’re both dead and undead, draining the SEO life from your website. Some good examples of Zombie pages are eCommerce pages for products that are no longer being sold or pages stuffed with filler that exists only in an attempt to rank for certain keywords.

These pages generally have a high bounce rate and become a mar on search engines’ view of a website. Instead of users landing on a page full of valuable content, they are turned off by a useless page.

The first step in eliminating Zombie pages is identifying them. Take a look at the following Analytics metrics to see if users are engaging with your website’s content:

  • Pageviews
  • Unique pageviews
  • Average time on page
  • Bounce rate
  • Exit rate
  • Pages per session

These are all good indicators of whether or not visitors find the content valuable or if they are leaving right away because of spammy or useless information.

The next step is getting rid of those Zombie pages, whether that be by resurrection or killing the page forever. If the page content has potential value, rewrite it or add more information that transforms it into a page that users want to visit. If there is no hope for the page, such as dead product pages, put it out of its misery. Then either install a 301 redirect if there is a true substitute or instruct search engines to stop indexing the page.

Not only will this create a better user experience, but it will eliminate index bloat. When a website has dozens – or hundreds – of low-quality pages indexed, it not only takes search engines longer to index the site but also signals to them that your website is undesirable – and your SEO takes a hit. If you need help getting rid of Zombie pages, contact Top Of The List and get your website back on track.

Just for Laughs

A college professor is teaching class one day.

“You in the back of the room, what was the date of the signing of the Magna Carta?”

“I dunno.”

“You don’t? Well, let’s try this. Who was Bonnie Prince Charley?”

“I dunno.”

“Well, tell me what the Tennis Court Oath was?”

“I dunno.”

“I assigned this stuff last Friday. What were you doing this last weekend?”

“I was out drinking beer and fishing with friends.”

dog laughing

“You were? What audacity to stand there and tell me a thing like that? How do you ever expect to pass this course?”

“I don’t. I just came in to fix the radiator.”

Our best for your success!
