For years, search engine optimization relied on a predictable playbook: target keywords, scale content, and build backlinks. But with the rise of Language Learning Models (LLMs) and AI-powered search, Artificial Intelligence has rewritten the rules.
Winning in today’s search landscape requires more than surface-level content—it demands genuine brand authority and perspective, clear contextual signals, and an expansive off-page footprint. Here is a breakdown of how AI search actually works today and how you can optimize for it.
LLM Traffic Trends & E-Commerce Impact
Analyzing LLM referral patterns offers some key insights into how AI directs users.
Previsible released a study earlier this month that looked at 6.77 million Language Learning Model (LLM) sessions from November 2024 through May 2026. They found that approximately 25% of AI-referred traffic leads to internal search results on websites – as in, the results that appear when someone uses your on-site search capabilities.
What this means: Make sure your website has on-site search capabilities and ensure that it is functioning properly. Next, test it by searching on terms and their variations that your audience might be searching on. The top results should be the pages you want AI to use to get its information about your company.
The same study notes that 43% of ecommerce referral traffic from LLM sessions goes directly to product pages. This makes it clear that ecommerce sessions show a clear intent for purchase, making AI referrals to product pages a high priority.
What this means: Product pages must provide clear information (and schema) that’s easy for AI to understand. They should also make it incredibly easy for a customer to see the information they need (product details, images, videos, etc.) and complete a purchase.
Content Strategy & Brand Authority
To capture high-intent traffic from AI engines, brands must reconsider how they create content and establish credibility..
Mass-produced commodity content that is widely available common knowledge used to be a quick way for websites to show authority on keyword clusters. However this scaled content method actually causes more harm than good, leading the search engines to believe you don’t offer anything unique. Google generative AI favors content when it showcases your unique experience with a topic, provides high-quality images and videos where relevant, and is clear and organized in presentation.
What this means: A unique perspective is critical for content, especially blogs. If the information you’re presenting is available somewhere else with a quick Google Search, it’s only valuable if it offers something new or different.
In addition to providing a first-hand perspective, how your brand is discussed across the web plays a foundational role in building AI’s trust.
Maryanna Franco and João da Silva from Search Engine Land ran a 7-day study on athleisure brands and found that co-mentions led to better performance in category searches than knowledge graph and schema entity optimization alone. While LLMs use knowledge graphs and schema markup to collect information, they use clustered brand mentions to better understand and re-affirm a brand’s association with a category.
What this means: Having your brand mentioned in highly relevant industry articles, even without a link, is a huge context signal to AI.
Expanding Your Digital Footprint & Off-Page Signals
Because AI relies heavily on contextual brand mentions, your optimization efforts cannot be limited to your own domain.
Your presence anywhere online matters.
When LLMs provide answers to prompts, results frequently include Reddit threads, Facebook comments, TikTok and YouTube videos, and a slew of other seemingly minor mentions. This means your customers, employees, and essentially any stakeholders are representatives of your brand.
What this means: Having a widespread presence online in social media and forums is essential. No mention is too small to have an impact.
Personalization & Holistic App Integration
Beyond broader web signals, modern AI systems are increasingly tuning session outcomes to the unique preferences of individual users.
AI is really, really good at personalizing results.
Google’s Personal Intelligence, introduced earlier this year, integrates their connected products like Gmail, Photos, Calendar, and Maps with AI to produce information tailored to the individual.
But then they took it a step further.
AI is also integrating app connectivity, bridging the gap between human and artificial intelligence at a very personal level. Google’s Gemini now facilitates connections to Doordash, Instacart, Uber, Expedia, Capcut, Canva, Hubspot, Dropbox, Spotify, Intuit, and a wide range of other productivity, creative, and service platforms. This list is likely to grow exponentially.
This means that when you get a lead from AI, they were essentially hand-picked to be the perfect customer for your brand.
What this means: Treat every new customer like an ideal customer. Aim for a wonderful experience with every interaction and build that positive reputation to continue the cycle. When a lead comes directly from an AI platform, treat it as a top priority.
An Unrecognizable Future – Let’s Just Do Our Best
We are getting to the point where AI may understand a person’s view of an experience better than they do themselves.
Using app integrations, an AI agent could see an unhappy facial expression in a photo that’s geo-tagged with a location they visited, or see a low tip given to an Uber driver when their Intuit account shows ample funds available. These are speculation, not confirmed – but it demonstrates the potential for what is to come.
As a digital marketing agency, we will work tirelessly to help businesses stay on top of what’s to come in the online landscape – be that AI optimization, PPC ad creation, website content strategy, or social media presence. But the world is becoming a smarter place; more keen to gimmicks, clickbait, and false promises and less interested in redundancy and manufactured appearances. When we have the opportunity to choose quality over quick results, quality always wins.
