Mobile-First Indexing: Google’s Not-So-Distant Future

Though it’s been a long time coming, Google just announced that by September 2020, 100% of it’s indexed sites will be mobile-first. Mobile-first indexing means that, when ranking, Google pays more attention to a site’s factors as it is experienced on mobile – like speed and usability. Currently, 70% of sites have been moved to mobile-first indexing, but Google is pushing to get everyone moved over as quickly as they can. The initiative was originally launched in 2016 and has been slowly gaining momentum as it adds websites to the new standard.

So, what does this mean for the average website owner? Sites should now be optimized for mobile use instead of desktop. While desktop user experience is still important, Google is more interested in how mobile users will access information. Luckily, Top Of The List has been optimizing for mobile since the initiative was announced and will continue to make sure that our clients’ sites are up-to-date for Google’s preferences. Not sure if your site is mobile-optimized? Contact us and we will make sure you don’t fall through Google’s cracks.

Tip of the Month

Use the 4-1-1 social media rule. No, it’s not an outdated way to get phone listings; it’s a social media strategy from Andrew Davis of Brandscaping. The idea behind 4-1-1 is that for every 6 posts your business makes on social media platforms, like Facebook or Twitter, that:

  • 4 of them are reposts or content created by other industry professionals
  • 1 of them is an original post with new content
  • 1 of them is a “self-serving” post that contains advertising or promotional value for your company (warning: these will be the least popular).

Social media posting isn’t an exact science, nor will 4-1-1  guarantee any particular results, but online marketers swear that this ratio keeps users engaged and content fresh without getting overwhelmed.

Just for Laughs

A guy goes in for a job interview and sits down with the boss.
The boss asks him, “What do you think is your worst quality?”
The man says “I’m probably too honest.”
The boss says, “That’s not a bad thing, I think being honest is a good quality.”
The man replies, “I don’t care about what you think!”

Our best for your success!
